Introduction to the Starbucks Menu

Have you ever been to Starbucks and not known what to get? The menu can be overwhelming with all of the choices, but when you break it down by sections, it becomes pretty easy to figure out. However with long line behind you and an impatient barista in front of you, who really has time to study the whole menu, so here's a quick break down of the menu.

Drink Size

First, you're going to have to pick a size because Starbucks can't just go with small, medium and large like everyone else.

  • Their small is called a tall. Yes, you read that correctly, their small is a tall.
  • The medium is called a grande. I understand, that also sounds like a large to me too.
  • The large is called a venti. In Italian the word venti means twenty ounces, the size of their large.

Drink Choices

This is where it starts to get complicated, so make sure you pay attention.

Coffee And Tea

Yes, Starbucks does serve just coffee and teas, I had no idea either.

In the stores, you can find their coffee of the week, their newest roast called the Pike Place Blend and a few other choices. You can get your coffee black and add sugar cream or whatever else you like or you can have them make you Cafe Au Lait which is a coffee with steamed milk.

When I think Starbucks, I generally don't think tea, but they do have a vast selection that you can order. Tazo Tea is the Starbucks brand. They have green, black herbal and chai teas. If you want, you can get all crazy and turn them into lemonades or get them as lattes.

Espresso Drinks

Espresso drinks are some of the most popular that you can find at Starbucks. An espresso is much stronger version of coffee. Some people think that it's from espresso beans, but really it's just finely ground coffee beans with hot water under high pressure forced through it.

I suppose you could just get an espresso, but theres dozens and dozens of delicious drinks to try.

Cafe Mocha - an espresso with mocha syrup and whipped cream on top.

Caramel Macchiato - an espresso with with vanilla and steamed milk, topped with foam and a luscious caramel sauce.

That's just a couple, so try a few different ones and maybe you'll find a favorite.

You can order them hot, or iced.

Frappuccinos

Frappuccins AKA fraps are ice blended coffee drinks, similar to a shake. They're a perfect way to stay cool and get caffeinated on a hot summer day.

There's far more of these than I could list and since the menu is always changing, here's a couple of tried and true favorites.

Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino - Coffee blended with chocolate, spearmint flavor, milk and mocha sauce. If that wasn't enough, they put chocolate whipped cream and mocha sauce on top.

White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino - White chocolate milk and coffee blended in ice. They top this one with whipped cream.

Those are the main drinks that you can choose from, but you're not done yet. Starbucks let's customize your drinks practically down to the last drop.

Milk

Nonfat - If you'd like your drink to be healthier, you can get non-fat milk with a lot of the drinks. However, the blended drinks like the frappuccinos are made from premixed concentrate so they can't change the milk.

Low Fat - They also call this percent. It's a mix of fifty percent whole milk and fifty percent non-fat milk.

Breve - This is what they call half and half. It makes the drink thicker, sweeter, more expensive and a lot more fattening.

Soy - At an additional cost you can get milk made from soy beans.

Organic - Not every store has organic milk, but some do.

More Customizations

Foam - Drinks like the lattes and macchiatos have a set amount of foam on top, so you can ask for more, less or none at all.

Wet Or Dry - Cappuccinos are made with half milk and half foam, but you can order it dry which has more film and less milk or wet which is the other way around.

Whipped Cream - Many of the drinks come with whipped cream, but you can ask for it without whipped cream. And you can add whipped cream to practically every other drink.

Extra Hot - If you like your drink extra hot you can order it that way. It's good if you want to save your drink for later and still want it to be warm then.

140 Degrees - If you want a cooler, but still hot drink you can ask fr this temperature.

Sugar, Sweet 'n' Low, Equal and Splenda - You can ask the barista to add these to your drink because it'll save time and when it's added when the drink is still hot, it blends together better.

Caramel Sauce - Some drinks come with caramel sauce, but it can be added to other drinks too. Just make sure you get the sauce, which is real caramel, versus the syrup which is just sugar, water and caramel flavor.

Extra Ice/Lite On The Ice - Do you really need an explanation for this one?

Upside Down - Caramel macchiatos are made with espresso shots and caramel dropped on top. You can get it upside down, which mixes the drink together, melts the caramel quicker.

Double Blended - A Frappunccino double blended, which makes it smoother and more liquid.

Now, you can step in line and order your drink. Don't be afraid to try new things, for the longest time I was ordering the same drink every time, I was getting something I liked, but there's so much more to enjoy on the menu.

Which Coffee Machine is Best For Your Business?

There are other types of coffee machine available too, such as the filter coffee machine, pod machine or instant coffee machine, but these are not considered in this article as they cannot produce 'proper' speciality coffee drinks such as latte, espresso, ristretto etc.

The basis of all luxury speciality coffee drinks is the espresso which both our systems produce. This is made by passing hot water under pressure through a wad of ground coffee, to produce a short, strong and concentrated coffee liquor. When the espresso shot is blended with foamed or steamed milk then most popular types of specialty coffee drinks such as cappuccino, latte, macchiato can be made.

Both the traditional espresso machine and the bean to cup machine are able to produce espresso shots and foamed milk.

Firstly we will consider overall drink quality. Here the traditional espresso machine comes out on top. This is assuming that the operator (barista) is well trained and both types of equipment are clean and well-maintained.

An espresso based drink produced on a traditional espresso machine and prepared by a top barista is the best you can get! Coffee beverages made from a bean to cup machine are very good, but don't quite make it to the standard set by a traditional system.

Secondly when considering the consistency of the final beverage the bean to cup machine would usually win. The quality of drink from a traditional espresso machine depends on the barista and his frame of mind at the time and so can vary greatly. Bean to cup machines however produce the same drink at the push of a button and are not dependent on the operator.

Thirdly, ease of use. Here again the fully automatic bean to cup machine comes out on top as most drinks are prepared by the push of a button. To prepare and serve a quality beverage from a traditional espresso machine is a skilled art and takes considerable practise to master.

Fourthly to consider is 'theatre' or ambience of the drink preparation. Whilst a bean to cup machine is purely a functional device to produce a quality beverage, the traditional espresso machine adds that special magic to the whole coffee experience. Customers can enjoy the overall coffee experience as they watch the skilled barista at work.

Our of our four criteria, you will notice that both have 2 wins each, so choose whatever best suits your set-up. Decide which are the most important factors in your particular case before contacting your local coffee machine supplier.

The Great Cappuccino Hype

For some, a regular cup of coffee is the perfect way to start the day. For others, a cappuccino or frozen coffee drink is a must. As a matter of fact the specialty drink is so popular that people are willing to wait in long lines and spend as much as $5 per a cup.

And while sipping on that favorite drink may seem heavenly, there's more than meets the eye! So, not only is that indulgence taking a chunk out of your pocketbook, it may also be affecting you your health.

For example:

• Caffeine is the main ingredient in every one of these specialty drinks. Caffeine is also very addictive. Once you're hooked it's very difficult to just give it up and there's almost always some side effect. Some side effects are headaches, dizziness, nervousness, irritability, anxiety and insomnia. Too much caffeine can lead to depression, hallucinations, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

• Milk is another main ingredient found in these specialty drinks. While many people may disagree that milk can be a danger to their health, they're also probably not aware of rBGH. rBGH is a growth hormone that is injected into cows to make them produce more milk. RHGB has been known to cause tumors in the breasts and possibly cause reproductive problems in women. The steroid may also increase the risk of some colon related problems.

• Artificial sweeteners are often used in these specialty drinks due to its popularity of being known as a less fattening sugar alternative. Yet, artificial sweeteners are far worse than sugar because they're made with chemicals. Many of these sweeteners have been linked to manic depression, panic attacks, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, birth defects, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.

• Artificial colors and flavors may also be used in these drinks because it makes them look and taste better. Plus it's often cheaper to use a fake flavoring rather than spend money on the real thing. However, artificial colors and flavors are nothing but man-made chemicals.
If the above still doesn't have you convinced, keep in mind that just one cappuccino or frozen iced coffee can contain as much as 700 calories per a cup and there's no nutritional value whatsoever. So, if you must indulge, keep it simple or simply make your own.

Espresso making video

dOOwadooWA: Say

You probably will get faster (and better) results mixing your stuff from Starbucks with some "store bought" cheap coffee with a regular grind. (Try a one to one ratio to start... and don't do it to your whole bag.) This will give the water some wiggle room. Most home espresso making machines really should be using a medium grind... there's just not enough pressure behind the water in a home machine.

Ordering the Best Coffee From Wholesale Coffee Distributors

There are two basic types of coffee beans offered by wholesale coffee distributors, namely Arabica and Robusta. The two types of coffee are grown everywhere in the world, but true lovers of coffee tend to prefer Arabica beans to Robusta. Arabica beans produce a richly flavored coffee as well as the thickness which is the hallmark of a gourmet coffee. The finest coffees are usually grown at high altitudes in the tropics (the gourmet coffee plant needs cold but cannot tolerate frost), and Arabica coffee lends itself to high altitude conditions. On the other hand, Arabica beans are more difficult to grow, being more susceptible to diseases and producing smaller crops than Robusta, and therefore it is more expensive to produce than Robusta. Robusta coffee does not have as rich a flavor and thickness as Arabica coffee, but the Robusta plant is hardier and disease-resistant. Many companies mix the two types together to create their blends.

To produce the best coffee, the roasted beans from the wholesale coffee distributor must be ground properly. To preserve freshness, the grinding should not be done until the coffee is ready to be brewed. There are two principal types of coffee grinders on the market, namely blade grinders and burr grinders. Blade grinders come with a propeller like blade, and do not have special settings, hence does not grind the coffee uniformly. If you want a finer grind you have to grind your coffee for a considerably longer time period. Blade grinders are all right for drip coffee, but for espresso and other specialty coffees a burr grinder is needed. Burr grinders come in two types - flat burr and conical burr. The coffee beans are drawn between the burrs and crushed to a uniform size. Burr grinders have settings which allow you to create the exact grind you want. They are sine qua non for espresso and other specialty coffee grinds.

The different ways coffee can be brewed all require different grinds. Coarse grind is used in percolators and Neapolitans; and also in stovetop coffee pots to make espresso. Medium coarse grind is used in French press and other coffee makers which have stainless steel or gold filters. Medium grind is used by drip coffee makers. Fine grind is used in espresso machines. Extra fine grind is used in old-style espresso machines and in vacuum pots.

There are three main ways of serving coffee by the pound: café, espresso and latte. A latte is a mixture of espresso with steamed milk. Cappuccino, for example, usually is made of espresso, steamed milk, and frothed milk. Café Breva is cappuccino made with half and half rather than whole milk. Frappe is made with ice cream rather than milk. Mocha is a type of latte or cappuccino which has chocolate syrup mixed in. Caffe Americano is made of one shot of espresso and six ounces or more of hot water. Espresso con Panna has whipped cream mixed in. Ristretto is an intensely-flavored type of espresso made by forcing less water than usual through the ground coffee. In Lungo, on the contrary, twice as much water as usual is forced through the ground coffee.

There is a lot to learn about coffee which wholesale coffee distributors never tell you. Enjoying coffee by the pound is both a science and an art. Knowing the different options available from your local wholesale coffee distributor is the first step to brewing perfect coffee every time.

How to Make Restaurant-Like Coffee at Home?

Coffee can be enjoyed in many ways. Different people have different tastes-probably the reason why there are concoctions sprouting left and right to cater to the varying palates. Not a lot of us coffee drinkers know how to make coffee. We savor the taste of every cup without having to make our own-owing it to the coffee shops we can find on every corner.

* Selecting the beans

It all starts where coffee starts-the beans. Good quality beans will produce
good quality coffee. You may think that what is good for someone is not
necessarily good for you. True. And that is one irresolvable issue because,
again, we have different tastes. This is why we are going to tackle this issue
at a different angle. By good beans we mean those beans that have maintained
their quality right from when you purchase them up to the time you brew a batch.
Therefore, enjoying good quality coffee will highly depend you.

* Selecting the right packaging

After you have selected which type of coffee you like, you then
proceed to inspecting the packaging. The coffee beans should not be stored where
it is exposed to air. The tendency is it loses its flavor. What you have to know
is that freshly roasted coffee beans emit certain gases that may build up in the
bag. You should let the coffee beans breathe out the gas but not breathe in the
air. Hence, suppliers have these bags with small, one-way valves. It allows the
gases produced by the coffee beans to exit the bag without letting the air
enter. Another plus is you can store freshly roasted beans immediately after
cooling down so it will not lose its flavor.

* Storing the beans at home

You may have been assured of good quality beans from the time
they were roasted up to the time you take the bag home. Now you have to think of
maintaining its quality from the time you open the bag. The solution is an
airtight container. Grind only a certain amount of beans-enough for the batch
you are about to brew. Then store the remaining beans in the airtight container.
If you grind a lot of beans but you will not brew them immediately, chances are
it loses its flavor.

* Knowing the grind

A good quality coffee grinder offers different settings as to
the coarseness of grind. What you should know is that the coarseness should be
compatible with the coffee brewer to produce an excellent brew. Coarse grind is
compatible with French presses and percolators. Medium grind is for most
drip-type brewers. And the fine grind is used for espresso machines. If you want
to brew a strong batch of coffee using drip-type brewer, opt to use slightly
finer grind.

* Brewing to perfection

Water plays an important role because it can highly affect the taste of the
coffee even if you have excellent beans. Use water that you are comfortable
drinking. You do not have to worry about the temperature of the water and the
brewing time if your machine automates them. But if you are using French press,
do not use boiling water. Allow a minute or two before pouring in the water. And
brew the batch three to five minutes.

You can now be assured of savoring a good cup of coffee. Knowing how to make coffee will definitely make our coffee connoisseur level higher.

Coffee's Bad Rap Came From Cigarettes - Coffee's Actually Not Bad

Get this: for many years scientists claimed that drinking coffee was responsible for all kinds of ailments and illnesses, and they were wrong. In actuality most of the ailments were caused by the cigarettes on which most of the coffee drinkers were puffing. It turns out that coffee and cigarettes are habits that go hand-in-hand for many people, a factor that the studies did not take into account.

Not that coffee is as healthy as, say, a drink from an unpolluted spring high in the mountains. It's not. The caffeine from coffee can be addictive, and those who drink coffee on a regular basis will find that quitting can be somewhat painful. In addition, coffee can be a bladder irritant and disturb your sleep. People who drink a lot of coffee are also at greater risk for developing osteoporosis.

Health Benefits of Coffee

On the other hand, coffee also has its health benefits. Aside from a mild (and sometimes useful jolt) here are a few:

Reduced Suicide Rates

Caffeinated substances act like mild antidepressants. According to the Nurses' Healthy Study, suicide rates 50% less among coffee drinkers than among those who don't drink coffee.

Decreased Chance of Gallstone Development

Although researchers are not sure why, coffee-drinkers are less prone to gallstones than non-coffee drinkers. Part of the reason may be that coffee stimulates the gallbladder to contract regularly, and this movement may not allow gallstones to form. Caffeine also slows the crystallization of cholesterol, which is part of the how gallstones form.

Less Risk of Type-2 Diabetes

According to the Stockholm Diabetes Prevention Program, people who regularly drink significant amounts of coffee (5 or more cups per day) are less likely to develop this kind of diabetes than those who drink 2 cups or fewer.

Like red wine, dark chocolate, and the egg, coffee is making a comeback as a substance that isn't totally sinful, and actually has health benefits. As with everything we put into our bodies, "moderation in all things, even moderation" is a fabulous motto to follow!

Latte art techniques - 1st style of 3

... It varies. With nonfat or 2% you have to stretch the milk way less than you do with whole milk. Half and half has to be stretched far more to get this kind of foam. the higher the percentage of milk fat, the more one must stretch it.... and you don't need esspresso to be used as a base for the rossetta. You could use french-pressed coffee or a bit of steamed milk in chocolate...you just need a dark tone to offset the white of the milk

The Power of Coffee

The wonderful aroma, the heavenly flavors, the warm felling of true bliss with every sip, we all know of the many excellent qualities of a great cup of coffee, however, I have found a higher power that can come from your favorite Venti java. I believe it can change the world one cup at a time if you choose to follow me down the coffee bean road (with cream of course).

Time to be Honest Honestly,
I have only been a true coffee drinker for about 2 years. I was a staunch believer in my love for a morning diet Coke, which I still enjoy once in a while especially from McDonalds, where they do something magical to that diet Coke that makes me do back flips. I have always marveled at the delicious scents, aromas, and various flavors available when my beautiful wife made her daily pot of coffee. The problem was always taking that first sip and I just could not appreciate the taste to the same level of the erotic smell in the air.

Why I Converted
As I mentioned, I have always been a diet Coke fan, however, I always worried a bit about what it was doing to my teeth, body, stomach, health, etc. and finally just made a decision that I was going to make the switch of being a coffee drinker. I also have read a lot about the antioxidant effect of coffee and the fact that is much more organic, which has to be better for me-right? I tried the mocha's, latte's, and so on until I decided the way to go was simply ordering a medium coffee with 2 creams, which seems to give me the boost I need without adding pounds to the love handles. I can honestly say that I now look forward to my early morning coffee, paper, and little slice of heaven to start each day.

Where is the True Power of Coffee?
What I learned was that most coffee places have a frequent buyer card that they will click a credit for you with each purchase and for every 10 cups of coffee bought you get the 11th free. Every morning I get my coffee and get my card punched and throw the card in the arm rest of my car. Once in a while I would remember to pull out a card and use it for the free coffee which was fine but did not really give me the jolt of excitement I thought it would, until one day. That day changed my coffee buying and thoughts on things forever. I was in the usual car line up in the drive thru with 4-5 other cars and I looked in the rear view mirror of my car and I saw the Sister from my church driving in a tiny little compact car that looked a bit neglected in repairs, however, she did not seem to mind at all by the smile on her face. At that instant a thought popped in my head that this wonderful woman goes through her day doing so many wonderful things for so many and no one probably ever thanks her or even knows what she has done and wouldn't it be cool if I could do that for her right now. When it was my turn to pay I asked the attendant what the car behind me ordered and he said a large coffee so I handed him one of my fully punched frequent coffee cards and asked that he gave her my free coffee. I drove out of the parking quickly as I did not want her to see me, have time to track me down, or even know who paid. I just wanted it to be a small bit of kindness for her to start her day.

The Frequent Buyer Card is Alive
I am here to tell you that the true power of that little coffee frequent buyer card was felt like never before. I could only imagine how that random act of kindness put an even bigger smile on her face and how many more people she would probably help that day from the wonderful work she does. It also gave me a smile as I might have been able to make a small difference in someone's life that day by using the coffee frequent buyer card that meant so little to me until that moment. Now I cherish every frequent buyer card I get and always look in my rear view mirror when I am in line to see whose day I can make a little better by just paying for their cup of coffee. I urge you to try this and change your own life instantly but more important someone else's day, which if paid forward can change our world one cup of coffee at a time.
